Which Linux distribution is installed?

You may choose between the Gentoo or Debian Linux distribution - from our point of view the most efficient distributions currently available on the market.

Which Linux vServer Patchset version do you use?

We always operate with the most current stable Linux vServer Patchset version.

Do I have full root access to my vServer?

Yes, except for a couple of necessary restrictions

Are there restrictions?

Yes, for technical and safety reasons, there are a few small restrictions:

  • The Kernel and Modules come from the Host system.
  • The Network Configuration is fixed and comes from the Host system.
  • The localhost loopback IP-Address 127.0.0.1 is not available.
  • The /proc and /dev File systems are read only.
  • The Portage Tree is set to Read Only.
  • Firewall rules can only be set by us on the Host system (service included in the price).
  • No new Device Nodes can be created.
  • The Capability NET_ADMIN as well as CAP_NET_RAW are not available.

How do I login to my vServer?

To raise the security of your vServer, you cannot login directly via root into your vServer, but instead you must use the admin user. An example via OpenSSH follows:

You can, of course, change this behaviour in relation to your own vServer.

What do the DNS settings look like?

The correct DNS settings from the file /etc/resolv.conf are as follows:

How do I update my Gentoo system?

The Portage directory is linked to your vServer in read only mode, to save space. The Portage tree is updated every 12 hours. When you want to update your system, enter the following commands as root in your Shell:

 

Otherwise the normal Gentoo update process applies.

Which Gentoo profile is used?

Since you are within a vServer, the corresponding vServer profile (default-linux/x86/vserver) is used.

For Pentium 4 with the following CFLAGS:

How do I get more disk place/bandwidth?

Very simply: order the required additional amount.

Can I modify my vServer firewall rules?

No. With the current version of the vServer Software, netfilter is not supported. On request, we will define, for you, your firewall rules on the host system. Please contact our Support.

What may I run on my vServer?

You may run any software or services you wish on your vServer, providing these activities are legal, within the jurisdictions that they are used.

Who is responsible for the security of my vServer?

We, of course, guarantee physical security. Moreover, access violations from other vServer customers are prevented

In terms of the software and services: no-one other than yourself. This also applies to data security. We offer you the option of Online Backup.

When you would like specific TCP or UDP ports blocked, please contact our Support. We will then make of appropriate changes to our firewall configuration.

Can I request a new installation of my vServer?

Yes, when you have completely "destroyed" the system. Contact our Support - we will install a new basic system for you.

Can I run Asterisk in my vServer?

Yes, Asterisk functions within a vServer in combination with the Digium ztdummy timer. Please indicate that you wish this when you order your vServer. Then we can create for you the required Device Nodes.

I operate my own Mail-Server – are you familiar with Anti-Spam and Anti-Virus solutions?

Yes, we offer the Mail Filter product, which complements simply and perfectly your existing Mail-Server.

Can you recommend for me a backup solution?

Try our Online Backup, this can be easily integrated into an existing vServer.

Can I send e-mails without my own Mail Server?

Yes, in combination with our product, Mail Domain.

Do I need my own (authorised) DNS server for my domains?

No, you can use our DNS infrastructure.

What is my reverse DNS lookup entry?

By default it is vserver-xy.stepping-stone.ch. Contact our Support if you would like to change this.

A service cannot be started, a message like this appears in the log: could not create listen socket for "localhost"

The name "localhost" can't be resolved.

Check if localhost is added to the hosts file and that the permissions of the hosts file are correct:
